New initiative from the EU called “Single Market for Green Products” trying to standardize how green product claims are made by establishing new “Product Environmental Footprint” (PEF) and “Organizational Environmental Footprint” (OEF) processes and tools.

These are life cycle-based and meant to comport with ISO 14000 series and other standards already in use. This will be a three year pilot effort, with hopes of developing PEFCR - product environmental footprint category rules - on volunteered products. Member countries are encouraged to use the process, but it's not mandatory.

Slide1As usual, such standards are a lot of work to document and are rife with disagreements on assumptions. Transparency is supposed to prevent that.

We'll see who steps forward.
